Facilities:

• Motion and Gait Analysis System

The first gait analysis laboratory in Turkey.
The only gait analysis laboratory that develops her own data collection and analysis software and uses them in analysis, in Turkey.
Equipped with six camera, two force plates, EMG, KISS-DAQ, KISS-Gait, Kiss-GaitM and Dyna-Gait software packages with kinematic effects of estimating joint centers.

We can appreciate the visible spectrum of the daylight but block out infrared light. Thanks to 3M Prestige Films and 3M Türkiye for donating and applying this selective transparent film to our laboratory.


• Soft Tissue Tester

Equipment primarily developed to assess the soft tissue mechanical properties of trans-tibial amputee residual limbs.
Thanks to Birant Makina and Mr. Emir Birant, now, with three different sized elliptical indentor tips we are conducting research on anisotropic material properties of soft tissues in vivo.

Brief (and Incomplete) History of Biomechanics Research in Mechanical Engineering Department

• In late 1960 and early 1970's Necip Berme produced the first strain gauge based force plate in Department of Mechanical Engineering.
• Ali Erkan Engin worked in Department of Mechanical Engineering.
• During 1970, 80 and 90 many professors did computational and/or experimental biomechanics research with medical doctors, dentists and veterinary people.
• The first Gait Analysis studies started in a room in Dynamic Systems Laboratory using video cameras, computer controlled video recorders and 2-D models in mid 1990's
• Gait Analysis System evolved to Biomechanics Laboratory and into 3-D with State Planning Organization support. This resulted the very first computerized three dimensional gait analysis system of Turkey: KISS (Kinematic Support System). Posture studies evolved from this laboratory.
  
• In early 2000 in vivo soft tissue testing system, the first indenter and constitutive modelling of soft tissues started in biomechanics laboratory.
• Many mechanical engineering department faculty independent from biomechanics laboratory continued their experimental and/or computational biomechanics studies in the new millennium.
• In 2006 the interdiciplinary Biomedical Engineering program started and Biomechanics Laboratory supported this program.
• In 2011 BIOMATEN The center of Excellence in Biometarials and Tissue Engineering was founded and Biomechanics Laboratory became a satellite laboratory of BIOMATEN. A biomedical materials testing system with video extansometer and temperature controlled fluid bath and a high speed experimental stress analysis system were acquired.
